Gay Muslims, Victims of 'A Jihad for Love'
Sep 5 2008
The relationship of Ferda and Kiymet is one of the few light moments in "A Jihad for Love," Parvez Sharma's documentary about homosexuality in the Muslim world. The two Turkish women laugh and touch in public, and in a poignant scene, Kiymet meets Ferda's 80-year-old mother. The introduction goes well, and the three women sit together and joke about life and love. This kind of normality is absent in the lives of Sharma's other characters, most of whom have had to make wrenching choices between pursuing love and remaining within the embrace of traditional societies.

Entertainment

  • DVD REVIEW : Happy Endings !!! Sep 5 2008 It's a comedy, sort of," a title card announces at the start of Happy Endings --just after Mamie (Lisa Kudrow) has been hit by a car. So it is, but talk about an unhappy beginning! Never fear, writer/director Don Roos will fulfill the promise of that title in several unexpected ways. The story then flashes back to 1983 for Mamie's life-altering encounter with her stepbrother. Mamie and Charley (Steve Coogan) will struggle with its consequences for the rest of the film. Does her teen pregnancy explain the fact that she became an abortion counsellor or that he came out of the closet? Roos doesn't say, but nor does he judge. He loves his characters--foibles and all--in his ambitious, Altman-esque follow-up to the acerbic yet heartfelt >The Opposite of Sex.

But because it is a book with insight into the difficult journey of self-discovery and spiritual empowerment, any reader-gay or straight-will find it a rich resource." -Phyllis Curott, Priestess and author of the best-selling Book of Shadows and WitchCrafting
  • How to Survive Your Own Gay Life: Aug 18 2008 A book about surviving your gay life in today's culture and, more importantly, how to create rewarding relationships and a strengthening inner life. Everybody has a philosophy, in this ancient and noble sense of the word. But few writers have Mr. Brass's credentials. Author of numerous works of poetry and science fiction, he's also been involved with gay liberation and health institutions since their inception. So he knows a little something about survival, and it shows. Mr. Brass's lovely phrase for the special contributions we make is "the gay work." The gay work involves, for example, open friendliess to strangers, in contrast to the paranoid insularity of general urban experience and the ever-beleagered Great American Family.
  • Adult Novels of Men in the "Womanless World" : by David Seubert Aug 11 2008 Gay fiction never existed as a distinct genre until the 1970s, and any study of pre 70s gay culture through literature usually looks at the same handful of mainstream novels with gay themes that had been published. Unfortunately, an entire body of literature, that of gay pulps, has been ignored. Gay pulps offer a fascinating glimpse into gay culture of the 1950s and 1960s, and although they might be viewed as stereotypical and negative, they are probably the largest body of overtly gay writings of the time and cannot be ignored. Gay exploitation titles first started appearing in the 1950s, taking advantage of growing postwar gay visibility. The number of pulps, including gay friendly titles, exploded in the 1960s for a variety of reasons.
